About The Independent Living Center, Inc. (TILC)
To better suit the needs of people with disabilities in Southwest Missouri, The Independent Living Center was founded in 1994 as a satellite office of the Southwest Center for Independent Living in Springfield, Missouri. A year later, TILC became a fully funded, independent center. In 2001, TILC opened satellite offices in Carthage and Monett, to better meet the growing needs in these rural areas. Continuing its commitment to providing quality services for people with disabilities in rural areas, TILC hired a McDonald County outreach coordinator in 2003 who is based in Powell. In 2006, TILC combined the Carthage and Joplin offices and opened a second Joplin office to house the Independent Living In-Home Care business.
The primary goal of The Independent Living Center is to assist individuals with physical disabilities maintain their independence in the least restrictive environment possible. TILC is "consumer driven" meaning that we believe the individual knows their needs better than anyone else and should be the responsible party in directing their own care and their own future.
